Fez, history of the city - 3 The first core of the city known under the name of Fez Al Bali, was founded by Idris 1st, in 789 A.C on the right bank of the Fez wadi in the site of the Andalusian district. This appellation comes from the first settlement of the city which, in addition to the autochthones, receives refugee families from Andalusia after the famous suburb riot that occurred in Cordoba in 817. Fez, history of the city - 4 the site of the Kairouanais district. The city was surrounded by an enclosure bored of six gates and equipped with a mosque. Idriss I also built an enclosure, a mosque, a palace and a market. In 1143, in the end of a nine month siege, Fez is occupied by the Almohades (1130-1269). Behind its ramparts, the city is organized like Marrakesh; it has its cult and worship places, trade, its water supply system, its corporations, its aristocracy... With the Merinides that conquer the city in the middle of the Xlllth century, Fez becomes the capital of Morocco and lives its golden age. Their first great sovereign, Abou Youssef Yacoub (1258-1286) builds Fez Jdid (the New one) in 1276, immediately in the west of the city, strengthens it with a powerful enclosure, builds a great mosque, residential districts, palace (disappeared), gardens. In the XlVth century, a Jewish district, the first Mellah of Morocco, came to associate with the new foundation. But the Merinides are known to be as builders of Medersas, these characteristic colleges different of size and decoration, competing of beauty and symmetry, organized around a patio with a basin in the centre. |
