| Created in 1928, the Ethnographic museum of Tetouan occupies a historical fortress built on order of the sultan Moulay Abderrahmane (from the Alaouites dynasty) about 1830... |
Tetouan and its area counted among the most significant centres of handicraft production on a regional and national scale, the ethnographic museum of Tetouan presents through its exposures the various aspects of the local craft industry during the last centuries... The work of Zellige: enamelled terra cotta marquetry: It constitutes one of the most characteristic artistic trades of the city of Tetouan; it is characterized by its shaping technique, its colours and its surface aspects |
which give it a particular singularity and a real authenticity. The pottery of the Rif area: hand modelled pottery following an extremely old tradition; it is primarily a domestic production for culinary use often without decorations or with simple geometrical decorations, engraved or painted using natural brown colours. Female production, it belongs to the daily domestic tasks of the women in this area. The work of leather: As testify the tanneries of Tetouan which some could date from XVth century, the work of leather is also old in this city. The manufacture of Turkish slippers, belts, bags and other objects out of leather was very flourishing during the last centuries. The embroidery of Tetouan (Taajira and Ghorza): constitute one of the most original embroideries of Morocco. It holds its origin, from the Turkish art of which it still keeps certain characters of style. But the embroidery of Tetouan also clearly carries the Andalusian influence introduced by the Andalusian emigrants in the XVth century. The ethnographic museum of Tetouan also proposes the cultural and ethnographic aspects of the city and its area according to two essential themes: public life and private life. |
