| Ouirgane, history of Tinmel |
Where to sleep in Marrakesh? |
| Tinmel constitutes one of the major sites of the medieval history of Morocco. |
It is from this small Berber village on the Neffis Valley that came the Almohades conquerors, led by their spiritual guide Mahdi ibn Toumert then by Abd Al-Moumen Ibn Ali, to form the greatest empire which the Western Mediterranean knew since that of Rome. This political ascendance made of Tinmel in this second half of the XIIth century the true spiritual capital of the empire and also the construction of the great mosque, a royal residence which sheltered the Almohades sovereigns during their traditional pious visits to the mausoleum of the venerated Mahdi Ibn Toumert. The ride lasted nearly twenty years and finishes by the fall of the Almoravide dynasty and their capital Marrakech 1147 A.C. After the decline of the dynasty, Tinmel became again what it was before this great adventure: a simple village in the medium of the High Atlas. |
