 Tangier, the site of Cotta
| Cotta is located in Tangier close to the Hercules caves on the Atlantic coast. |
It is the most significant antique architectural site of Tangier area. The site was indicated for the first time by Ch Tissot and G Buchet who recognized in these ruins the station of Cotta mentioned by Pline the Ancient. The first excavations were carried out by C of Montalban, but it is Mr. Ponsich who has the merit of bringing to light these ruins with precise details about their chronology. The surveys carried out since 1959 outside the factory provided a material which affirms that the |
site was occupied since the III-IInd centuries. B-C. The site of Cotta represents a strategic point for coastal navigation and it was the nucleus of a human installation since the prehistoric era. The site of Cotta contains a Roman salting factory considered among the most preserved establishments in the Western Mediterranean. |
