| Founded in the 11th century, the city of Salé knew a real development during the Almohades era (XIIth century) and Merinides (XIVth century), thanks to its strategic position on the terrestrial road: Fez/Marrakech and thanks to its port, exchange centre between Europe and Morocco. |
| Thanks to its commercial activity during the XVIIIth century, Salé extended its influence deep in the country to some very remote Areas. In the XVIIth century, the arrival of the Muslim refugees from Spain gave the city a new breath and created a competition with the very close city of Rabat. At that time Salé was famous especially for its intense maritime activity. The XIXth century announces the end of the commercial dominating role of Salé pushing it to a very long and deep lethargy that lasted throughout all the XIXth century and during the French protectorate a high place of cultural and religious life. |
